Oct 13th was the NY Sneakerpimps show, and it’s always a strange feeling being back at the Avalon (formerly Limelight).
For those of you who don’t know, the old Limelight had a pretty infamous history. It had gotten out of hand at the height of the scene’s notoriety in 1996, when club promoter Michael Alig was convicted for the murder of Angel Melendez. Owner Peter Gatien was later convicted of Tax evasion charges which ultimately led to the demise of the Limelight empire.
Last year’s Sneakerpimps show in NY was the first time I had set foot in the Limelight since its
closing 10 years ago and it had me reminiscing mainly about my past works of that time. In 1995, I had my first ever public art exhibition at the Limelight while I was attending School of Visual Arts.
Below is a quick retrospective of some of the pieces that were on display that night, and a couple others from the same era. It’s amazing how much things can change over the course of 10 years yet some things relatively stay the same (girl faces, guns, violence and dark imagery aren’t just passing fads, in case you thought this was a “new” thing). Unfortunately, so many of the works were lost, stolen or destroyed over the course of time.
